Stryker Rotary Learns Of Doughbox Bakery Operations

Kim Krieger spoke to the Stryker Rotary Club about the Doughbox Bakery and other attractions at the Sauder Village complex. The Doughbox opened as a part of the Barn Restaurant in 1976. In 1990 the Barn Restaurant made some changes to provide more seating and one of those changes was to move the Bakery to another building on the Village property. The next major change occurred when Sauder Village took over the bakery operation in 1995. The Doughbox has continued to use “Home Style Baking Methods” through all of the changes. The main difference is that they make the baked goods in much larger quantities than a family would at home. The Doughbox produces about 19,000 pies each year along with other baked goods. They currently have 25 employees who work at different times during the day. The largest number of workers begins their day at eleven at night working till four in the morning. A second group of employees comes in early in the morning to frost cookies and perform other tasks to get the baked goods ready for sale. The last group of employees begins their work day later spending their work day helping customers. The bakery has paid staff working alongside volunteers to produce the products they sell. Holidays tend to provide a much larger demand for goods and additional volunteers are called upon to meet the demand. One newer addition to the bakery is a drive up window, and it has proven to be popular with customers. Kim, pictured on the left, spoke as a guest of Stryker Rotary Member Wendy Koch. March 14 has been set aside as membership evening for the Stryker Rotary Club. The public is invited to attend. The event will begin at 6PM where you will learn about the club and enjoy some refreshments. The meeting will be held at the Stryker Methodist Church.
