The board gave its approval and support for the development of state and national bicycle routes. Commissioners directed appropriate officials see to it the route is officially designated by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Ohio Department of Transportation. Once the route is approved, there may be efforts to publicize the route via internet maps, incorporating it on local maps, etc.
Tourism agencies may be involved in these efforts.
Bicycle tourism contributed $47 billion a year to local communities which provide facilities for such tourists. AASHTO has designated a series of corridors crossing Ohio to be developed as various U.S. bicycle routes.
ODOT supports the designated bicycle routes through Ohio, but the process requires continued collaboration with the respective communities to inventory, analyze, and designate specific sites the routes will traverse.
In Williams County, a specific route has been identified and county officials have investigated the proposed route and found it to be suitable, will have it designated so that it can be mapped and signed, thereby promoting bicycle tourism in our area; and
The route may change over time because new facilities are being constructed that are more suitable for cyclists.
