Stryker Schools Plans Educational Push For Millage Levy Renewal

Stryker Schools will be seeking a renewal of its millage levy in a couple of months.

The district will ask voters May 2 to renew the levy of 4.6 mills to raise $335,000 over five years.

The ballot language approved the county Board of Elections may be misunderstood as a new millage request, but that is not the case Superintendent Nate Johnson said.

“We don’t like the wording,” Johnson told the school board Feb. 27. “It is a renewal, that’s just the way the Board of Elections has to have it in the sample ballot.”

The district is putting together a list of talking points board members can use to educate voters about the issue. The board will also reach out to local media as well.

The renewal is crucial as the upcoming state budget shows a cut in revenues for the district, Johnson said.

The board approved the superintendent’s recommendation to hire Chase Grieser to be a volunteer baseball coach and Cale Fry as a full-time baseball coach. All jobs offers are pending an FBI/BCI background check.

The board approved the purchase of some properties off Allison Street in Stryker. The motion gives the superintendent some leeway to make a deal.

In other news, the board received the financial report.

The general fund balance is $3.74 million.

Revenues for the preceding month was $468,933.65; Income Tax was $165,051.62.

Expenses were $431,999.76.

The board accepted the following donations:
$20 from Arvonwood Kennel for the post prom.
$200 from Stryker Farmer’s Exchange for the post prom.
$25 from Ohio Gas Company for the post prom.
A cell phone donated anonymously for the Maintenance Supervisor.
$40 from Jodi Herman Insurance for the post prom.
$500 from R&S Lines for the baseball program.
$200 from Goebel Farms for the baseball program.
$50 from the Class of 1958 for the library for a book in honor of Rose Burkholder and $206. 10 for the Spanish/Art Club.
