Arlo “Tobe” Short of Stryker, Ohio, passed away on Saturday November 7, 2020 at the age of 81 years old. He died at Ft Wayne Lutheran Hospital following a short illness. Arlo was the youngest child of Leland and Ruth (Beck) Short born on August 14, 1939.

He was born and raised on the farm where he lived all but 10 years of his life. A life-long farmer, Arlo graduated from Stryker High School in 1957 and worked several years as a Culligan Man. He retired from working after many years at Anderson-Vreeland in Bryan, Ohio.

He continued farming until the day he was taken to the hospital. On June 1960 he married Karen (Stuckey) Short and this summer they celebrated 60 years of marriage together with a family dinner and drive-by parade.

He was a life-long member of Lockport Mennonite Church. Singing was always a part of his life and he sang for many years with his brothers and brothers-in-law in the Lockport Quintet.

He is survived by his wife and four children. Tobi (Bill Culp) of Columbia City, IN, Todd (Joy) Short of Archbold, OH, Treasure (Dennis) Stinson, Altamonte Springs, Fl and Toni (Bill) Benysh of Wabash, IN. He will be remembered for his orneriness and teasing by his eight grandchildren. Chelsae Culp of Claypool, IN, Zebbulin (Christman) Short of Williamston, S.C., Hilary (Austin) Groff, Mt. Joy, PA, Mariah (Alexander) Hurst of Archbold, OH, Andrea and Ronald “RJ” Stinson of Altamonte Springs and Aidan and Maya Benysh of Wabash, IN, and three precious great-grandaughters, Ella, Camila and Hadley. He is also survived by two sisters, Arva Beck and Romaine (Donald) Beck.

He was preceded by his parents, two brothers and their spouses, Lamar (Doris) Short and Donavan (Verda) Short and a brother-in-law, Charles Beck.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, and in honoring the family and Tobe’s wishes,  funeral services and interment will be private. Interment will be in Lockport Cemetery. Pastor Steve Heatwole will officiate.

As the pandemic has isolated people from each other and has kept families from gathering we ask that, in lieu of flowers and other memorial items in Arlo’s memory carry out acts of kindness for family, friends and those in need — make someone laugh, talk to a stranger, buy someone lunch, or stop in for a cup of coffee.

Online condolences may be given at:  www.grisierfh.com Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Grisier Funeral Home in Stryker.

I worked with Arlo a short while at Culligan and lived in the same block as the plant.
Arlo was a kind and pleasant friend.
