Atha Mercer (1929 – 2024)

(Montpelier Resident)

Atha I. Mercer, 95, of Montpelier passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024 at Evergreen Healthcare in Montpelier.

She was born on July 10, 1929 to Howard A. and Laura Madge (Kline) Hershiser in Brady Township, Williams County, Ohio. She graduated from Pioneer High School in 1948.

On October 10, 1957 she married Sherman R. Mercer at Silver Creek Church of the Brethren and he preceded her in death in 1984.

Atha was a member of Silver Creek Church of the Brethren. She worked a variety of jobs at a number of places in Montpelier.


Atha enjoyed her morning trips to McDonalds to get coffee and walking with friends at the skating rink and school, quilting and sewing. She was the Queen of Procrastination.

She is survived by her children Teresa (Gordon) Smeltzer of Montpelier, Jim Mercer of Bradenton, Florida and Sharri (Brook) Bandeen of Millbury, Ohio; step daughter Melinda Robison of Montpelier; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Atha was preceded in death by her parents, husband Sherman and infant brother Leighton Hershiser.


Visitation for Atha will be on Saturday, August 24th from 11am-1pm, with a service to follow at 1pm with Pastor Mike Wilder to officiate at the Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier. Interment will follow at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer.

Memorial contributions may be given to Elara Hospice or the Williams County Humane Society Rainbow Bridge.
