The life of Stryker’s most famous resident was celebrated Sept. 24 with a daylong recognition of the centennial of his death. William Knight, a Civil War soldier who was part of a raid that attempted to steal a Confederate locomotive, “The General,” was remembered for his heroism during that war with re-enactors, talks and a showing of a movie of the mission. Knight died Sept. 26, 1916 at the age of 79. He is one of the nation’s first Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. Director Jim Hicks met with the county commissioners Sept. 22 to discuss a grant he is seeking through the Bureau of Workmen’s Compensation is to help pay for new power cots and power load systems. The grant is for $40,000 and is a 3:1 match. Hicks will send the grant agreement to the prosecutor for approval and then will present it to the commissioners to pass a resolution and approve the agreement. Storrer, 91, of Montpelier passed away early Tuesday morning at Genesis Healthcare Bryan Center.  She was born on February 12, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to Cecil Douglas and Grace (Nugent) Grimes.  Jane graduated from Montpelier High School in 1943.  On June 23, 1946 she married Robert A. Storrer in Montpelier and he survives. The Swine, Beef, and Sheep Skillathons held at the Fulton County Fairgrounds on August 31st were an opportunity for Jr. Fair youth to display their knowledge of their 4-H or FFA animal projects. The youth who entered the skillathons answered questions on feeding, care, medication, parts of the animal, meat cuts and breed identification. The Outstanding Market Exhibitor Award is given to one exhibitor from each of the three species of swine, beef and sheep. A Montpelier woman has a new lease on life after receiving a kidney transplant from her postal carrier. Tanya (Ruble) Likens received her new organ Sept. 14 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. She is recuperating at her home and looking forward to the future. The surgery ended a lifelong struggle. “I learned I had kidney disease when I was nine,” Tanya said. “Three years ago I was put on the transplant list.” Time was running out on the 28-year-old as she began dialysis two years ago.
