With the resignation of full-time officer Steve Towns who left his position to serve as interim Williams County Sheriff, West Unity once again had an opening to fill on the police force. Chief J.R. Jones recommended that council move part-time officer, Phil Fry, into the full-time opening. Sworn in back in April as a West Unity police officer, Fry has been a part-time member of the West Unity Police department up until now. Plans are actively underway for the West Unity Fall Fest, which will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012. The West Unity Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Relay for Life, will hold its Chili Fest on that day in the downtown area. The Brady Township Fire Department will be offering a pancake breakfast that morning at the fire hall and a silent auction will be held at the American Legion hall. Clarence F Montgomery, (Carnie), 97 years, of rural Montpelier, passed away Tuesday September 4, 2012, in his home with his family by his side, under the care of Hospice of Williams County. Carnie was born July 14, 1915, in Montpelier, the son of the late Arthur and Helen (Vance) Montgomery. He was a 1933 graduate of Montpelier High School. He married Violet Irene Churchman on August 17, 1940 and she survives. Rita Mae Borton, 70, of Stryker, OH, formerly of Fayette, died early Sunday morning, September 2, 2012, at the Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice in Defiance, OH, following a brief battle with cancer. She was born November 10, 1941, in Oak Hill, WV, to the Late Willard and Dorothy (Bayes) Lavinder. Rita married James F. Borton at St. James Lutheran Church in Burlington, OH, and he survives. Junell D. Zedaker, 87, Bryan, passed away in the arms of her family Friday evening August 24, 2012 at Bryan Care and Rehabilitation. Mrs. Zedaker was born in Bryan, Ohio on December 26, 1924 the daughter of the late Dorothy A. (Brown) and the late Lester W. Motter. Garry was born in St. Mary’s, Ohio on May 8, 1958, the son of William and Patricia (Smith) Eschenbrenner. He was a 1976 graduate of Stryker High School and attended Four County Auto Mechanics School. Virginia Mae (Hug) Kunisch, 86, passed away on August 24, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Sylvania, Ohio. She was born near Edon, Ohio, on December 28, 1925, to August and Flora Hug (Ries). She married Raymond J. Kunisch of Toledo on June 11, 1949, and raised seven children. Virginia graduated from the St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1948 and loved working in the nursery at St. Vincent Hospital after graduation and until she started her family. (Birkhahn) Wolf, born on May 7th 1924 in Defiance, Ohio. Leota graduated with the class of 1942 at Defiance High School.
