DEFIANCE – The Montpelier Locomotives made a trip south to St. Mikes Golf Course on September 18th and took a 183-185 victory over the host Fairview Apaches home with them. Blaine Thorp was medalist for the match leading the Locomotives with a round of 41, while Hunter Shaull registered a 46.  Sam Rings and Clay O’Neal checked in with rounds of 48, with Zack Murray shooting a 49.  Closing out the scoring for Montpelier was Leslie Clark with a 60.

MONTPELIER – On a cold, sometimes rainy, and often windy September 18th afternoon, the North Central Eagles battled the conditions and the visiting Pettisville Blackbirds to take 151-198 victory in the BBC clash to finish 5-0 in the league.  With the win the Eagles captured the regular season conference title for the first time since 2005. Overcoming the elements to lead the way for the Eagles was Jalen Dancer with a one over par 36, while Clayton VanDeVoorde was one shot behind at 37.  Cameron Cochran and Branden Turner had rounds of 39 and Kole Peterson finished with a 40. …

MONTPELIER – The Hilltop Cadets played host to the Antwerp Archers in a September 17th match held at Hillcrest.  The home team had little trouble in downing the Archers by a score of 194-233. Freshman Trevor Shipman paced the Cadets with a score of 46, while Travis Haynes was right behind at 47.  Jesse Westfall finished with a 50 and Isaac VanArsdalen a 51.  Other scores for Hilltop were Josiah Law 58 and Noelle Chester 63.

BRYAN – The home course was a lot kinder to the visitors in a September 13th NWOAL confrontation between the Montpelier Locomotives and Delta Panthers at Suburban Golf Course.  The Panthers eased past Montpelier by a score of 168-190. Blaine Thorp was low man for the Locos with a round of 42, while Sam Rings was hot on his tracks with a 43.  Leslie Clark shot 52 and Clay O’Neal 53.  Hunter Shaull and Andrew Luke closed out the scoring for Montpelier with scores of 54.

WAUSEON – On September 12th the Pettisville Blackbirds played host to the Hilltop Cadets and Tinora Rams at Ironwood Golf Course.  The hosts nipped there BBC counterparts 199-202, but couldn’t overcome the 160 shot by the Rams. Once again Tyler Herschberger led the way for Pettisville with a 43, while Evan King shot 49.  Reed Behnfeldt ended with a 50, while Greg Kempf and Ben Grader checked in at 57.  Matt Krill finished the round with a total of 59 for the Blackbirds. FAYETTE – The Edon Lady Bombers traveled to Eagle Country to tangle with BBC rival Fayette on September 18. A slow start for the Lady Eagles did them in on this night as the Lady Bombers swept to a BBC win, 25-9, 25-18 and 25-14. Sydney Stoll was 45/45 setting with 14 assists, and 12/13 serving with 2 aces, 23 digs and 15 kills, and Alex Kiess went 45/45 setting with 19 assists and 7 kills. Emily Hubby had a monster performance with 5 aces, 9 digs, 8 assists, and 7 kills. Emily Eicher had 9 digs as well, also scoring 2 aces, 2 kills, and 2 blocks. ARCHBOLD – The Montpelier Lady Locos took on the Archbold Bluestreaks on September 18, losing in straight sets, 15-25, 13-25, and 10-25. No statistics were provided for this contest.

STRYKER – The Stryker Lady Panthers faced two opponents on September 15, the Patrick Henry Patriots and the Tinora Rams. The Panthers mauled the Patriots in two sets, 25-22 and 25-21, but lost a tough one to Tinora in three sets, 20-25, 25-22, and 19-25. Overall, through both matches, Maddie Uribes had 2 assists, Conner Varner had 8 kills. Rae Crutchfield also scored 8 kills and had a team high 11 blocks. North Central toppled Holgate in two games, 25-7 and 25-19, but fell to Delta in two close sets, 26-24 and 25-20. Against Delta, McKayla Swank led the team with 8 assists while Bralyn Wyrick, Shaylee Oyer, and Ashton Huffman scored 3, 2, and 1 aces respectively. PETTISVILLE – The Lady ‘Birds hosted the Fayette Eagles on September 13. It looked close at times, but Pettisville won in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, and 25-13. EDON – The Edon Lady Bombers faced a tough BBC opponent in the Hilltop Lady Cadets in The Hangar on September 13, but the Belles in Bomber Blue were up to the challenge as Sydney Stoll and Alex Kiess put together a flawless night setting the ball for a 25-13, 25-16 and 25-20 Edon win. Stoll was 39/39 setting with 9 assists, and 17/17 serving with 2 aces, 23 digs and a massive 20 kills. Kiess went 52/52 setting with 19 assists, 16/16 serving, and added 13 digs and 4 kills. STRYKER – The Stryker Lady Panthers welcomed the North Central Eagles into their den on September 6, winning in straight sets, 25-15, 25-18, and 25-23. Maddie Uribes had 15 assists. Conner Varner led the team with 15 kills while adding 2 blocks. Rae Crutchfield had 7 kills as well as 5 blocks while Christie Huston drove home 5 kills and had a team high 6 blocks.

PETTISVILLE – The Pettisville Blackbirds welcomed in the Swanton Bulldogs for a non-conference soccer game on September 17. The Blackbirds defense stifled the visitors, while the offense chalked up a 2-0 shutout win. Cam Norris and Caleb Liechty found the back of the net for the Battling Birds.

KALIDA – Facing a tough Kalida team on their own turf, the Pettisville Blackbirds were in for an uphill battle on September 14. The Blackbirds battled the Wildcats tooth and nail, but the lone goal scored in the match went to the home team as Pettisville left town on the short end of a 1-0 score.

MONTPELIER – Standing at 2-2 overall for the first time since 2007, the Locomotives were riding high and had high hopes of pulling off the huge upset over their arch-rival Bryan Golden Bears.  Prior to the kickoff in the September 21st NWOAL showdown, Montpelier Head Coach Steven Brancheau pointed to contending with Bryan’s speed and also wrapping up and making tackles as keys to his team’s success against the high powered Bryan offense who were averaging 50 points per game through the first four contests.  It didn’t take long for Brancheau to look like a psychic as the Golden Bears…

WEST UNITY – There are certain formalities that one comes to expect during a Homecoming Night celebration. Being flogged by your opponent does not rank highly amongst those formalities. Still though, that is exactly what went down at Daft Field on the evening of September 21, as the Hilltop Cadets welcomed TAAC rival Ottawa Hills to town. Paul J. Arnos, 91, rural Stryker, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the Lutheran Home in Napoleon. Prior to his retirement, he had been a lifelong area farmer. Paul was born in Defiance County, Ohio on May 31, 1921, the son of Frederick and Frieda (Wesche) Arnos. On December 1, 1946 he married Esther Schumacher, and she preceded him in death in 2008. Together they were blessed with two children and lived a busy, productive life on the family farm in Ridgeville Corners, Ohio. Gary Dean Delphous, 56, of E. Main St., Fayette, died early Saturday morning, September 22, 2012, at Fulton Manor in Wauseon. He was born on July 18, 1956, in Toledo, to Andrew A. and Dorothy Jean (Mininger) Delphous, and she survives. Gary enjoyed playing the guitar, and was a member of the Fayette Christian Church-Disciples in Fayette. The Holiday City council heard from guest Dan Hughes, a candidate for the Williams County Sheriff’s office, and discussed plans for a new picnic shelter during their September 20, 2012, meeting. Council first heard from Mr. Hughes, who discussed his qualifications for the office. He spoke of his 12 years of experience in the law enforcement field. Hughes is presently mayor of Stryker and serves as a part-time police officer in West Unity. Some business owners in the Village of Stryker have new beef in light of displaying and selling on the sidewalks in the business district. Newspaper boxes, which have no voice, are the target of said conflict. It has been pointed out that since the business owners are not permitted to sell on the sidewalks, the sale of newspapers from the Bryan Times boxes should also not be allowed. The C.B.S. Study Club met recently for the first meeting of the new year at Hillside Country Living. An impressive ceremony by Mary Hutchison installed the new officers as follows: Beverly Perkins, President Marge Michael, Vice President Jo Clark, Secretary Doris Fairchild, Treasurer Jean Young, Program Chairman Pauline Brillhart, outgoing president, led in the Pledge and Collect. The business meeting heard secretary and treasurer’s reports and communications. Four birthdays were celebrated. Jean Young presented the books for the new year. A Fayette Chamber meeting was held at the local library this passed Thursday, September 20. This is the first time the Chamber has met at the library, which looks quite nice since getting new carpet and a new computer center. The library was dedicated to the public on January 8, 1957, and currently serves the community by supplying a quiet, open area, free wifi, books, books on tape, DVDs, faxing, scanning, laminating, and voter registration. They also have tax forms and booklets available in every January, and run two different after-school programs for local schools. The first order of business…

Toledo Zoo Expert Kristin visited the Stryker Public Library Thursday, September 20, 2012. Close to 75 children/parents attended this exciting event to discover some of the interesting facts and animals that are at the Toledo Zoo. Kristin brought 3 live animals to the library with her. The 3 live animals were a white tree frog that was 8-10 years old, an albino hedge hog that is 8 months old, and an armadillo that is 9-10 months old. Excitingly, the children were able to pet the hedge hog and the armadillo. Kristin also showed the children the fur of a tiger…

Stryker Branch Library will be offering a Fall Craft Night hosted by Shirley Zwyer on Tuesday, October 2, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  She will teach the class members how to make scarecrows from dish towels or tea towels.  Sign up is required, and the class will be limited to 12 participants.  Funding for this craft program was provided by the 21st Century Grant.
