PIONEER (January 16, 2026) – With the Buckeye Border Conference boys’ basketball season reaching the halfway mark, the North Central Eagles claimed an important conference victory as they turned back Fayette, 51-30.
Trying to maintain their own pace with a pair of BBC frontrunners in Montpelier and Pettisville along with Edon in the championship hunt, North Central (8-6, 2-1 BBC) got off to a solid first quarter start against the visiting Eagles (4-7, 0-3 BBC).
With the host Eagles leading 6-4 over the first three minutes of the opening quarter, it was their defensive pressure and a decisive 10-0 scoring run which enabled North Central to grab a 16-4 lead after eight minutes of action.
North Central forced ten Fayette turnovers in the quarter, and it enabled them to reel off ten unanswered points over the final four minutes.
Tyler Meyers got it started for North Central with a steal and dunk followed by a baseline layup by Anton Hegler.
Meyers, who scored all six of his points in the first quarter, scored on a layup and a short jumper while Zack Whitley answered with a steal and basket.
“We played some really good defense tonight, and I think we got after Fayette a little bit,” said NC head coach Jalen Dancer.
“It jump started our transition basketball a little bit playing half-court defense. We got some easy baskets off our transtion and got off to a nice lead.”
Fayette would close the gap to seven points, 16-9, to begin the second quarter with Kruez Lichtenwald draining a three-pointer and Ethan Sperling followed with a steal and layup.
It was also the closest that Fayette would get for the remainder of the game as North Central went on a 9-0 run with Whitley scoring six of his game-high 16 points in the quarter.
“He’s (Whitley) has been doing that all year for us and is a big catalyst on our defense,” said the NC coach. “The way he gets after it defensively where he gets a lot of reflections. It definitely kicks start our team and gets into a transition. That’s where we are good at.”
A free throw by Jackson Poynter pushed North Central’s lead to 27-10, before Wyatt Bieber ended a five-minute plus scoring drought with an inside basket at the buzzer.
North Central shot very well in the first half, connecting on 13 of 22 shots for 59 percent from the floor compared to Fayette’s 5 of 18 for 27 percent. The host Eagles also forced 16 Fayette turnovers in the half.
“That’s been the M.O. of our team is to play hard defense and getting after it,” said Dancer. “Defensively, I couldn’t be prouder for my team tonight.”
The host Eagles led by as many as 27 points (46-19) in the fourth quarter as Fayette managed to outscore North Central, 15-10, over the final eight minutes.
Whitley was the lone North Central player in double figures, but the host Eagles also got other scoring contributions from Hegler with seven points while Meyers and Poynter both tallied six points.

North Central connected on 22 of 45 shots for 46 percent but were a dismal 2 of 10 from the charity stripe for 20 percent along with 32 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
“That has been our emphasis we’ve been focusing on probably about five or six games now,” said Dancer in referring to his team’s 19 turnovers. “We can be a mature team if we can slow ourselves down and move the ball better.”
Lichtenwald led Fayette with 14 points and Sperling contributed with five points. Fayette was 11 of 48 for 23 percent from the floor and 5 of 12 for 41 percent from the line along with 27 rebounds and 20 turnovers.
North Central looks to keep themselves in the conference race beginning with a road contest at Edon this Friday. “We’re feeling very confident as a team where we are defensively, and I think we’re ready at this point to go against those teams,” said Dancer.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun coming down the stretch and a lot of good basketball being played.”
