Happy Chinese New Year! It’s the Year of the Rooster and the Stryker School district is celebrating, “Panther style”. The educators of Stryker Elementary collaborate together to organize a Family Fun Night 3 times each year, complete with a themed meal. Each fun night is different, but the same in their focus: education. The elementary teachers pull resources and their always-on-the-go-minds to build this community event and make it fun for the few hundred people that attend. The plan is to get kids thinking and using their brains to learn and build critical thinking, without realizing they’re doing it, with fun games and crafts.

This year’s event, Happy Chinese New Year! focused on those brain-building fun games with a run-through obstacle course while holding a marshmallow with chopsticks, a pseudo pick-up sticks game with a mini-marshmallow and chopsticks, dragon crafts, fortune cookie writing, Chinese symbol face painting and even a taste test. (Ever had a Chinese dumpling?) The dinner menu was teriyaki chicken, fried rice, steamed veggies, egg roll and a fortune cookie.

The next event with be in the spring, during Right to Read Week. Plan your calendars for the next Family Fun event at Stryker!
