Students from Delta and Evergreen Middle Schools have graduated from the D.A.R.E. program put on by Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy Marv Zumfelde.
Approximately 200 students participated in the program for eleven weeks before their graduation. The class took place once a week for forty-five minutes with each student being taught various subjects during that time.
Subjects included a focus on good decision making and problem-solving skills. Other topics involved communicational skills, peer pressure, bullying, safe reporting, alcohol and tobacco facts with consequences, and over the counter/prescription medications.
Students were also able to have a guest speaker, Hunter Wilder, talk about the effects that doing drugs had on his life. Sheriff’s Department K9’s also came in to meet with the class and show the work that they perform.
Students were also given an opportunity to do tasks while wearing drunk impairment goggles. These goggles are used in schools and colleges to simulate the effects of being drunk.
While wearing the goggles students were given a field sobriety test and participated in various other activities.
Teachers Peggy Smith from Delta and Jenny Burkholder from Evergreen also worked with Deputy Zumfelde to help make the class a success yet again this year.
