The Pike-Delta-York Local School District Board of Education recognized students of the month for each of its schools at its meeting last Wednesday.

For the elementary school, first-grade student Austin Moore was recognized by his teacher, Andrea Flory. “Austin is very helpful in the classroom. He is willing to help me with any tasks around the room. He is a great friend and role model to his classmates.”

“He uses his manners all the time. When I hand out papers or give him something he always says thank you. He tries his best on everything.”

“If he does not understand something, he raises his hand to ask. He will work hard to learn material he is unsure about. He is a joy to have in class and is a hard worker,” Flory wrote in her recommendation.

For the middle school, eighth-grade student Carolina Hernandez-Cortez was recognized by teachers Samantha Kennedy, Barbara Taft, and Nathan Fox.

“Having Carolina for both math and science has been wonderful. She is a hardworking, kind, determined student who is also a caring friend,” Kennedy wrote in her recommendation.

“Carolina is consistently focused on what she is being asked and accomplishing those tasks to the best of her abilities.”

“With half the school year down, I’ll be excited to see what Carolina sets her mind to finishing this year as well as when she starts high school. I know she will achieve great things in life, and it will be due to her wonderful work ethic.”

Taft wrote that “Carolina has impressed me since the beginning of the school year with her work ethic and dedication to learning.”

“She is self-disciplined, extremely intelligent, and amenable to working with all personality types and respectful. What I love about having her is observing her evolving personality.”

“Though her quiet and calming nature remains present, her smiles, questions, and commentary have increased. She has allowed her true self to shine through, and I feel privileged to be her teacher.”

Fox wrote that “Carolina is a great student to have in class. She comes to class and gets started without being told, she is always willing to help others when she is able and is consistently a hard worker every day on projects she did not necessarily enjoy.”

For the high school, senior Estella Hilyard was recognized by Guidance Office Assistant Mallorie Vent, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, and Communication Barbie Shepherd, and teacher Michelle Egan.

Ms. Vent wrote, “She’s the co-editor of the yearbook, she’s positively outspoken, she helps her lead the class well.”

“She responds well to others’ suggestions, is very attentive to detail, and always quick to come up with solutions. She has a very giving personality that mixes well with her natural ability to lead,” Vent wrote in her recommendation.”

Shepherd wrote that “I am working with Estella on the senior spotlights project. She is organized, easy to communicate with, and is on top of any edits that need to be made. She takes direction well and is really committed to doing her best.”

Egan wrote that “She’s a deserving candidate for student of the month due to her dedication, enthusiasm, and leadership. In Spanish class, she consistently impressed me with her active participation and the effort she put into every project.”

“Beyond the classroom, she has shown commitment through her involvement in student council this year, where she eagerly steps up to help with various activities and events. Her hard work and positive attitude make her a standout student.”

The board also recognized the artistic achievement of ninth grade photography students Kaelynn Keener for her submission under the category “Reflections” and Kylie Massie for her submission under the category “’Tis the Season.”
