The Edgerton Village Council convened on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. for a productive session addressing community initiatives, infrastructure projects, and local concerns.
Mayor Day opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. Roll call confirmed the presence of council members Sharon Blinzler, Jason Gruver, Lance Bowsher, Leslie VanAusdale, Pam Wampler, and Chuck Wallace. In the absence of Fiscal Officer Denise Knecht, Administrative Assistant Amanda Knecht stepped in to assist.
The council approved the minutes from the April 16th meeting, with a motion by Wallace and a second by Wampler. Mayor Day took a moment to commend the 2025 Edgerton graduates for their volunteer efforts around the village, fostering community pride.
The council shared details of a Memorial Day program hosted by the American Legion on Monday, May 26, 2025, at Maple Grove Cemetery on North Michigan Avenue.
The event will honor veterans with a parade and a heartfelt ceremony, featuring:
9:30 a.m. – Parade forms near the American Legion Hall; 9:45 a.m. – Parade proceeds to Maple Grove Cemetery; 10:00 a.m. – Ceremony begins with the *Star-Spangled Banner* performed by the Edgerton High School Band, led by Ms. Zoe Scott.
The program includes an invocation and benediction by Bob Siebenaler of the American Legion, a memorial address by Reverend Daniel Borgelt of St. Mary Catholic Church, a floral tribute by children, a salute by the John D. Smith Memorial Post #10 Firing Squad, and *Taps* performed by Rose Drown and Eve Gerschutz.
Veterans who require seating can find chairs provided at the cemetery. In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Village Hall Gym.
Legion members are asked to arrive at the Legion Hall by 9:15 a.m. This meaningful tribute promises to unite the community in honoring those who served.
Amanda Knecht distributed bills and receipts for council review. Bowsher moved to approve the payment, seconded by Gruver.
The council approved hiring Carter Gibson as a part-time general laborer intern, with a motion by VanAusdale and a second by Wampler.
Resolution No. 2025-007, authorizing the purchase of a 32-acre parcel (PPN 061-230-00-009.000) primarily used for farming and a farm rental agreement with Everetts Family Farms, LLC, was passed.
Dawn Fitzcharles provided updates on upcoming road construction projects beginning with South Michigan Avenue.
Starting the week of May 27, 2025, the Village of Edgerton, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), will address the infamous “dreaded dip” on State Route 49.
Lane restrictions are expected from June 2, 2025, between the Defiance County line and Williams County Road C-60 for resurfacing work.
A bridge repair on State Route 49 over the St. Joseph River is scheduled for June 5–7, 2025, with a detour via State Route 249, State Route 2, and U.S. Highway 6.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) closed U.S. Hwy. 6 approximately three miles east of Butler starting April 17, 2025, for about 45 days, weather permitting. The detour in Ohio follows State Route 49, State Route 34, Indiana Route 427, and U.S. Hwy. 6.
Additionally, ODOT closed U.S. Hwy. 6 between State Route 2 and County Road 12 for a culvert replacement, with a detour via State Route 2, State Route 249, and U.S. Highway 127.
Council member Blinzler raised concerns about overflowing trash cans in uptown Edgerton, with litter spilling into the streets, possibly due to illegal dumping. The council proposed reviewing local business security footage to investigate.
Wampler shared positive feedback from Oak Street residents about a recently cleaned-out property, reflecting community improvements.
The meeting adjourned at 5:52 p.m. following a motion by VanAusdale, seconded by Bowsher. The next Edgerton Village Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.
