Edon art teacher Ann Eyster submitted a proposal to the Vans Custom Culture Shoe Re-design Contest a couple of months ago to participate in the contest. Edon High School was one of 500 proposals accepted. The proposal included field trips, guest artists, workshops for students, teachers, and community members, funds for all classroom teachers to use for arts integration, technology upgrades, art supplies and garden supplies. Vans Shoes sent Edon two pairs of Vans shoes to re-design. Students Emily Fox, a senior. and Taylor Trausch, a sophomore, were picked to design the shoes.
The topics are “Local Flavor” based on our community and “Off the Wall”. The kids had free rein to design their shoes and donated much of their time outside of school to finish the shoes. Photos of the finished shoes that were submitted are currently on display by the art room.
Eyster was recently contacted by Vans and informed that Edon is one of the top 50 in this national competition. Vans will now post photos and information on the 50 contestants at https://customculture.vans.com/ for online voting.
The winning school will receive $75,000.00 for the art department, a BBQ for the entire school, that includes prizes and music for the kids. Voting begins at 11:00 am EST on April 23rd and goes until May 4th and you may vote everyday. Everyone is also encouraged to share the link for voting via social media using the hastag #VansCustomCulture.
