Fifty years – half a century – encompasses a long period of time, but for Edon native sons, John Toner (right) and Gene McCrea (left), it seems only yesterday they first became involved in Lions Club International, a global leader in community service. While John and Gene have each served the Edon organization in a variety of capacities, it’s local fundraising events they’ve enjoyed over the years ~ especially the annual sausage sales during Edon Days. Not only does this major fundraiser afford members an opportunity to meet and greet residents from around the area, it also serves to generate money the club generously donates back to the community. In addition to sponsoring Boys and Girls State Delegates, Edon Lions have donated to EHS Music Department Band Trips to Washington DC and Florence Township Fire Department ~ to name a few. On hand recently to present John and Gene their letters of recognition and 50-Year Monarch Milestone Chevron Membership Award from Lions International President Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada is current Edon Lions Club President Virgil Fry. Edon Lions meet every third Monday of the month (with the exception of June, July, August) at Edon Public Library and are always looking for new members to join them. Feel free to contact John, Gene or Virgil for additional information on the caring service and work the club does within the Edon Community.
