Fifth grade students from Fayette Local Schools graduated from the Fayette Police Departments D.A.R.E. program.
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program taught students about risky situations, how to make safe and responsible decisions and how to respond to peer pressure.
They also learned how to appropriately communicate with friends and adults, bullying and the risk factors associated with substance abuse.
These lessons are valuable for their age group and help to strengthen their ability to make smart and safe decisions.
Students participated in the program over an eleven-week period with Fayette Police Sgt. Bill McConnell teaching the students.
Throughout those eleven weeks, students worked out of a notebook. At the end of the program, each student took what they learned throughout those weeks and wrote an essay.
The essays were then evaluated by the school principal Mrs. Selgo and the guidance counselor Jaime Johnson.
Three students, Landyn Sly, Hayden Wagner, and Grady Beers, were also chosen to read their essays aloud to the students.
With each student graduated from the program, the only thing left to do was to have a pizza party which helps give a good close to a needed program.
