Fayette Tops Edon In Overtime After Sanford’s Half Court Prayer Is Answered

EDON: February 10, 2014 – Throw away the won-lost records and admit it…The Hangar in Edon is not an easy place to get a road win. The Boys in Bomber Blue came into their February 10 BBC game against Fayette with a 7-9 record overall, while Fayette was sporting another fine season at 11-5. All signs pointed to a likely Eagles’ win, but like I said, The Hangar is not a place where visitors have an easy go of it. The 36-33 Fayette victory was one for the ages.

The Eagles and Bombers went back and forth until a 15-10 third put Fayette up by seven going into the fourth. Kaden Sapp canned 8 of his team-high 13 points to lead an Edon rally in the fourth that saw the Bombers pull even at the end of regulation. Overtime was on the way.

In the extra period, both teams’ defenses came to the fore, putting the clamps on scoring. Finally, the Bombers worked a strategy to move the ball around, kill the clock, and go for a final shot. The strategy worked well, until they moved the ball into the right corner where the Fayette defense forced a turnover.

After a timeout and with the potential of a second overtime looming large, the ball was inbounded from Grant Schaffner to Chandler Sanford, a senior with track and cross country experience dating back to his junior high days. Turning around and coming back to the other side of the court, he was picked up by Edon’s Brock Thiel who turned Sanford to the sideline. With the clock down to two seconds, Sanford, who had the pedal to the metal, ran the tightrope between River Wicker and the sideline, firing off a shot as he hit midcourt just prior to the buzzer. The ball grazed the back of the hoop…everything else was all net as the three-point prayer was answered. The explosion of the Fayette faithful was equally mirrored by the stunned silence of Bomber Nation.

Sanford led all scorers with 15 points for Fayette, with Koby Biddix landing 8. Jerad Seiler had 6 points, Tristen Bates, Tyler Cox and Skylar Lantz each had 2 points, and Schaffner finished with a free throw.

Jacob Brown backed Sapp with 8 points for Edon. Thiel finished with 7 points, Wicker 3, and Mike Peeples 2 points.

SCORING BY QUARTER:

Fayette 3 8 15 7 3 – 36

Edon 6 3 10 14 0 – 33
