(April 4th, 2015) – WAUSEON: In a match-up between the Buckeye Border Conference and the North Western Ohio Athletic League, the Lady Cadets traveled down 20A to take on Wauseon. The Lady Indians struggled against their guests, with Hilltop setting the tone of the afternoon in game one.

The girls of West Unity took down their hosts 13-3.

It was the second inning when Hilltop did most of their damage. Tallying up 5 runs, they built a substantial lead early in the contest. The Lady Indians were able to score a run in rebuttal, but still faced a 4 run deficit heading into the third inning.

That’s about as close as a determined Lady Cadet squad would let them get. Scoring another 4 runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth, their defense held firm against Wauseon. It wasn’t until the bottom of the seventh that the Indian girls would again add to their total, putting up a pair of runs. However, Hilltop had previously tacked on another 3 runs to their own score in the top of that inning.

Bailey Funkhouser had a monstrous day at the plate for the Cadets. Going a perfect 4 for 4 whilst standing in the batter’s box, the junior hit for a pair of singles and double each. She also knocked in 2 RBIs. Teammate Adryen Yates connected with the ball on 2 of her 4 appearances at the plate, earning a couple of singles as she drove in 3 RBIs herself.

For the Lady Indians, Katie Couts made the most of her one trip to the plate. The sophomore hit her way into a double, earning the last 2 RBIs of the contest. Senior Hayley Chamberlain also brought a runner home, getting a single in the process.

Aubrey Wyse pitched a complete game in her victory over the Indians. She gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits, striking out 5 Wauseon girls along the way. For Wauseon, Chamberlain took the loss, as she was on the mound for 4.1 innings. In that span, she gave up 5 earned runs on 6 hits. She struck out 4 batters. Ally Tefft came in to relieve the Wauseon senior, striking out 3 batters in 2.2 innings.
