Historic Reflection: 1947 – Bryan Garbage Truck

GARBAGE TRUCK … In 1946, the City of Bryan purchased this “Refuse-Getter” garbage truck at a cost of $4,754. According to a Bryan Press newspaper report, the Refuse-Getter was “the latest thing in its line, with a specially made body similar to those used in New York City.

“The truck has a low-slung box at the rear into which the refuse is placed by the collector. This box is purposely low to make pouring easy. The collector then pulls a lever and, as the truck moves forward, the small box is automatically pulled to the top of the truck where a lid opens, disclosing an opening through which the refuse is dumped into a large interior tank. The collecting box then slides back to the rear of the truck. It is all very neat and efficient.

“The truck will replace an uncovered tank truck hitherto used by the collector, Charles E. Kintner, that was about worn out.”

Shown with the new Refuse-Getter in front of Bryan City Hall are (left to right) Assistant Street Commissioner Vernon Coil, City fire truck driver Guy Eager, and Street Commissioner Burt Rosendaul. This colorized 1947 photograph is from the Williams County Public Library Huffman Photographic Archives.
