Joyce Covert (1920-2020)

M. Joyce Covert, 100 years, of Bryan, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020, at Evergreen Manor Nursing Center, Montpelier. Joyce was born June 22, 1920, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Frank and May (Rawling) Davison.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ferndale, Michigan, then went on to attend Wayne State University in Detroit. Joyce married Maxwell F. Covert, on June 28, 1941, at Martha Mary Chapel, Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, and he preceded her in death.

Maxwell and Joyce moved to Bryan in the early 1970’s when Maxwell became the first President of Northwest Technical School, now Northwest State Community College. Joyce was a former member of the Literary Forum and Taine Club. Joyce donated her time as a volunteer at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers as well as for the Red Cross at their local Blood Drives.

She was a former Girl Scout Leader. Joyce enjoyed gardening, both vegetables and flowers. Her specialty was raising roses. She also enjoyed doing cross stitch, paint by numbers and working crossword puzzles.


Surviving are her three children, Judith DuBois of Mesa, Arizona, Patricia (Jim) Powell of Frisco, Colorado, and Cynthia (Jim) Harger of Bryan; three exchange students, Tula, Maja and Yuko; seven grandchildren, Frank (Margi) DuBois, Becky Danbury, Chad Powell, J.J. (Christy) Powell, Nicole Harger, Jared Harger and Brianna (Kevin) Pool; eight great-grandchildren, Lauren and Tyler Dubois, Colby, Shelby and Kendall Danbury, Wyatt and Penny Powell, Maxwell and Crosby Pool.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Maxwell; grandson, Eric Maxwell Harger; one sister, Gladys Wendt; one son-in-law, Bill DuBois.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no public visitation or services. Arrangements are under the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, Bryan.


In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions be made to the Max F. and Joyce Covert Scholarship Fund at Northwest State Community College.
