Montpelier JV Holds On To Defeat Evergreen

February 2, 2015Updated:December 31, 2020No Comments2 Mins Read

(January 30th, 2015) – MONTPELIER: An explosive first half helped elevate Montpelier’s Junior Varsity boys to a big victory against Evergreen.

After outscoring the Vikings 29-12 in the first half, the Locos held on to win the game 40-33.

In the first quarter, the basket just seemed bigger on the Locomotives’ side of the court. They jumped to a huge lead in the early goings of the contest, claiming a 15-4 advantage by the end of the initial period. Following up that performance, Montpelier outscored the Vikings 14-8 in the second period.

The Locos potent offense disappeared in the third quarter, however. The young Montpelier boys were held scoreless in the period, while their defense allowed Evergreen to put up 9 points to help close the gap between the two teams. As the fourth quarter played out, it looked as though Evergreen was going to complete the comeback, coming within one possession of the Locos midway through the final stanza.

Montpelier would recover, though. They were able to keep ahead late into the contest, forcing Evergreen to foul in order to extend the game. When it was all said and done, Montpelier had claimed a 7 point win.

Gunnar Mason played a vital role in the Locomotive win. The junior had 9 points in the game.
