(June 9th, 2015) – PIONEER: In a low scoring affair, the Pioneer High School Summer Softball team played host to their counterparts from Montpelier in the first of two games to be played on the evening of June 9.  The respective defenses of each squad were stout throughout the contest, though the hometown girls were able to find just enough cracks in the Loco wall to earn a victory.

Pioneer bested Montpelier 3-0.

A single by Pioneer junior-to-be Makayla Hayes drove home Cady VanDeVoorde in the bottom of the first to procure an early 1-0 lead for the hosting team.  They would cling to that lead until the fifth inning, relying on their defense to preserve the 1 run advantage.  Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Makayla Knapp, a rising sophomore, drove home Addie Elser and VanDeVoorde again with a 2 RBI double.  With neither side able to produce a run in the sixth or seventh innings, Pioneer claimed the 3 run win.

Hayes had an incredible day at the mound for Pioneer.  Lasting all 7 innings of play, she didn’t allow a single run, giving up only 3 hits in the contest.  Her control was spot on, as she acquired 11 strikeouts while only allowing 1 walk.

It was Peyten Houk who took to the mound for Montpelier.  Throwing for 6 innings, Houk gave up 3 runs from 4 hits.  She also struck out a pair of Pioneer batters.

Collecting hits for Montpelier were Mikayla Shilt, Landri McKelvey, and Maddie Richmond.  All three Loco girls hit for singles in the loss.
