MONTPELIER, May 24, 2014: Author Victor Baird visited the Montpelier Public Library on May 24 with his latest historical work, “Railroading On The Wabash Fourth District.” Baird, a noted author and historian, has appeared in “Trains Magazine” and a number of historical society publications and professes a lifelong interest in railroads, particularly anything in the Midwest.
Baird’s “Railroading On The Wabash Fourth District” provides a fascinating historical record on the Wabash Fourth District, which began on the Eastern end in Montpelier and ran West to Clarke Junction, in Western Indiana. Montpelier residents interested in the history of the Village and the Railroad’s impact in the late 19th century on Montpelier and it’s growth during this period would be very interested in this book. The book, in addition to a detailed history of the Railroad, also contains several photographs from turn of the century Montpelier and the bustling rail yards. The author also included several first person accounts of life on the Wabash, as told by the men who spent their working lives on the rails.
The book also contains very interesting information on the Village of Fayette, and the Vanderbilt connection that changed the face of the town. Additionally, the Village of Edon and its importance in the early days has been detailed as the first stop from the Montpelier Station, designated #912, on the trip heading West to Chicago. The author has also included several photographs of the Edon Station, designated #918.
