The Hilltop Drama Club brought the beloved musical Annie to the stage at Millcreek West Unity School over the weekend, giving local audiences a chance to enjoy one of Broadway’s most recognizable and enduring stories.
Performances were held on Friday, March 6, Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, with students presenting the Depression-era tale of hope, resilience, and family through a production filled with familiar songs and well-known characters.
Set in December of 1933, Annie follows the story of a young orphan girl living under the harsh rule of Miss Hannigan in a New York City orphanage. Annie, who had been left as a baby with half of a silver locket and a note promising her parents would someday return, dreamed of finding her family and never gave up hope for a better future.
That determination carried her from the orphanage into the streets of New York, where she befriended a stray dog named Sandy and faced the struggles of the Great Depression with optimism and heart.
The story shifted when Annie was chosen to spend Christmas at the home of billionaire Oliver Warbucks. What began as a temporary holiday visit slowly changed into something much deeper as Annie’s presence began to transform the lives of those around her, including Warbucks and his secretary, Grace Farrell.
Along the way, the musical featured many of its most famous numbers, including “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Maybe,” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” helping bring both humor and emotion to the production.
As the show continued, Annie’s search for her real parents became the center of a larger plot involving Warbucks, Grace, Miss Hannigan, and Hannigan’s scheming brother, Rooster.
With deception, mistaken identity, and a reward offer all becoming part of the story, the production built toward its Christmas morning finale, where the truth was revealed, and Annie finally found the loving home she had always wanted.
The Hilltop Drama Club’s production delivered the same message that has made Annie a favorite for generations, showing that even in the hardest times, hope can still shine through. Congratulations to all the cast and crew on a job well done.
