Matt Stuckey, Director of Rehabilitation Therapy Services for Parkview Bryan & Montpelier Hospitals and Archbold Medical Center, served as guest speaker at the Monday, Feb. 12th general meeting of Montpelier Hospital Auxiliary held in the conference room.
Auxiliary President Armeda Sawmiller opened the meeting by leading all in the Auxiliary Prayer. She then introduced Mr. Stuckey, who assumed his duties as director for all three locations as of Oct. 1st. He has been employed at the hospitals for 15 years, five years at Bryan and 10 years at Montpelier.
Services include physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) at all three facilities, speech therapy (ST) (at Montpelier & Bryan), and cardiac & pulmonary rehab (only at Bryan). Qualified therapists and assistants work with inpatients and outpatients.
Physical therapy focuses on building strength, muscle function, motion mobility, and pain reduction. Occupational therapy works on skills to maximize independence and in some cases specialized hand therapy.
Speech therapy by a certified pathologist helps to improve speech, voice, language, cognition, communication, and swallowing disorders. Cardiac & pulmonary rehab involves monitored exercise following a patient’s acute cardiac or pulmonary event.
Inpatient physical therapy sessions are scheduled twice each day to improve functional mobility including ambulation or wheelchair propulsion, balance and endurance.
Recommendations may include certain medical equipment. Occupational therapy for inpatients is planned once or twice a day to perform various personal skills for toileting, bathing, dressing, hygiene, meal prep, managing medications, use of adaptive equipment and assessing cognition and vision.
Outpatient therapy is determined by referral from a patient’s primary physician. Dealing with at least 20 different types of insurance, therapy staff members are financially attentive to the health care of the patient.
Speech therapy is available for infants through adults with neurological disorders, those with language issues, and impairment due to cardiac and pulmonary events.
Parkview Bryan Hospital has a specialized physical therapy room with environment geared toward pediatric patients.
At Montpelier Hospital, a recreation therapist visits inpatients daily or weekly to offer activities to help adjust to hospitalization to occupy time and stimulate the mind.
Recreational activities may include DVDs, books, games, TV and use of patient activity cart, donated and replenished by Montpelier Hospital Auxiliary. “Kate’s Kart”, children’s activity card, is also available to pediatrics patients.
The auxiliary thanks Mr. Stuckey for his department overview and presented him with an appreciation gift. More information about rehabilitation therapy services is available by contacting Parkview Montpelier or Bryan Hospitals.
Following the program, Auxiliary President Armeda Sawmiller conducted the business portion of the meeting. Roll call was answered to “A town in northwest Ohio that begins with the first letter of your name”.
In keeping with Valentine’s Day, the thought for the day was “To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides” by David Viscott.
Members held a bakeless bake sale, bringing a recipe and donating the cost of the ingredients. Valentine’s greeting cards were collected to sign and deliver to patients and staff at the Montpelier Hospital. Reports were given by Secretary Connie Dunseth and Treasurer Joyce Schelling.
Appointed to the Nominating Committee were Linda Dilworth and Ruth Cooley with a third member to be announced later. The committee will submit nominees for officers at the April 8th meeting and election is scheduled during the May 13th meeting. Special flyers will be posted by the auxiliary at Montpelier Hospital for Doctors’ Day on March 30th.
The next auxiliary meeting is scheduled at 12 noon Monday, March 11th with a soup and salad luncheon in the fellowship hall at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Montpelier.
Members are asked to bring a salad and/or dessert. Two soups will be provided, and NO reservations are necessary. Guests are always welcome. Food treats for a gift basket will be collected.
Speaker will be Sandy Gordon, Director of Montpelier Parks & Recreation, talking on the summer lunch program and parks activities. Roll call will be “What do you like to do in the spring?”.
The auxiliary is also planning a Spring Silent Auction on Monday, April 8th in the small conference room at Montpelier Hospital. Items donated for the auction will need to be brought by 11 a.m. the day of the auction or contact Pres. Armeda Sawmiller (419-485-4567) to bring prior to that date.
Donation bids for the auction will be taken from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 2:00-3:00 p.m. (break taken for auxiliary meeting 1:00-2:00 p.m.). The silent auction will be open to the public.
