Approximately seventy gathered at Post #60 American Legion in Stryker on the evening of August 10, 2019, including dignitaries and veterans, to celebrate their 100th Anniversary. During the day, the building had been open from 9 – 2:30 allowing everyone to come through and benefit from the excellent historical displays that were set up for viewing. They were also treated to some delicious breakfast goodies and snacks throughout the day.
The big event in the evening was by invitation only and attendees enjoyed a wonderful meal of Swiss steak, homemade mashed potatoes, corn, green beans and dinner rolls with fresh homemade strawberry preserves. It was refreshing to see young and old, well known dignitaries and down home folks, veterans and their families, all visiting together and sharing memories of their lives and times in Stryker.
With Williams County resident, Bill Priest, as emcee, introductions to those who were speaking began. First was U.S. Congressman Bob Latta, who shared how his heart had been touched that very day at the funeral of Army PFC Brandon Kreischer. He thanked all who have served our country and shared how he gets to meet people each year from “the War College” as they come to his office each year. This year one of the officers asked him why he does what he does and he asked her why she does what she does, his point being that someone has to step up or things won’t get done.
“Other countries want America to lead and they feel safer when we are there. I always make it a point to thank every military person I see, for their service. They are the ones who make the sacrifice, not the politicians,” Latta said. He spoke of some of the historical moments and places in America that mean a lot to him and encouraged everyone to keep being patriots. He then presented Commander Rick Wityk with a flag which he had flown at the United States Capital to give to them for this anniversary, along with a certificate.

Stryker Mayor Joe Beck expressed his thanks to the post for all that they have done for Stryker. He shared that no matter what, military brothers and sisters are forever, they always have each others’ backs. As a veteran himself, he said that he may not be as involved with the Legion as he could be, but he is grateful for the “family” that they are for every veteran. He also spoke of the newest Williams County military death, “The sacrifice of Brandon is what gives us the ability to live in freedom. His family is forever changed and will hurt for a long time, but they also have to know that his life was a gift given for us, the American people.”
The dedication to this community by this American Legion post is great. Beck ended by saying thank you again and “On this 100th anniversary here, it is about support, community and togetherness.”
Bill Priest shared about the changes that have happened over the years in Stryker, especially those during the years between WWI and WWII, before introducing Stryker Area Heritage Council President
