The United Way of Fulton County is excited to provide a new program for the Wauseon Exempted Village School District. In partnership with the Fulton County Health Department, United Way of Fulton County will be piloting a program for the 3rd grade classrooms at Wauseon Elementary School.
The program, titled “Serving up my Plate,” will be piloted this week as a part of United Way’s Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative. “The health of those in our community has always been a top priority area of United Way. Reaching children at a young age and getting them to adopt healthy choices early on helps pave the way for a healthier Fulton County,” said Tante Lovins, Resource Development and Community Engagement Coordinator of United Way of Fulton County.
The program will educate the students on healthy eating habits, portion sizes, and the amount of sugar in beverages. Serving up my Plate will also provide students the opportunity to learn the importance of eating from all five food groups using the MyPlate icon and a variety of hands–on activities. Students will also learn the important role of physical activity in staying healthy.
Rachel Kinsman, Health Education Coordinator from the Fulton County Health Department will provide the Serving up my Plate program to the students once a week for 3 weeks. Each of the three educational sessions she will spend 30 minutes covering various nutritional topics. The program will also include tasting sessions to encourage the students to try new fruits and vegetables. To further encourage healthy eating United Way of Fulton County will provide fresh produce vouchers for the students during the program.
“Ultimately, with resources, we would love to see this program grow and expand to other school districts and involve a lot more fun and innovative ways to get kids excited about engaging in healthy behaviors, said Lovins.
