WAUSEON CITY COUNCIL: Council Approves Repairs For North Park Monument

August 25, 2023Updated:September 22, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

Following the approval of the prior meeting minutes the August 21, 2023 Wauseon City Council meeting moved to department reports.

Public Works Director Keith Torbet informed council that Jeff Newlove has submitted his letter of retirement effective October 1, 2023.

Councilor Shane Chamberlin brought to Torbet’s attention the need for a stop sign at the intersection of Seneca Drive and Arrowhead Trail.

City Law Director Tom McWatters apologized to council for not getting them golf cart information. He stated he will be getting that information to them in the next few days.

Council President Scott Stiritz then gave the report of the August 8th Park Board meeting.  One topic of discussion was the North Park Monument. Stiriz reported that since the monument has been cleaned there is actual repair work that needs to be done.

Torbet said the estimated cost of the repair work would be $8,700. Councilor Stickley stated that the repair work should be done before winter.

Mayor Kathy Huner said they can discuss a recommendation under new business. Stiriz then reported the Tree Commission met on August 9th with no recommendations coming out of the meeting.

Council then passed following resolutions on their first reading:

Resolution 2023-12: A resolution authorizing the mayor or her designee to submit an application to participate in the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) state capital improvement and/or local transportation improvement program(s) and to enter into any agreements as required; and declaring an emergency.

Resolution 2023-13: A resolution to amend Ordinance 2022-7 annual appropriation ordinance by authorizing the director of finance to increase or decrease certain line account appropriations within the various funds listed within the year of 2023.

Under new business, council authorized the fire department to accept a bid for the purchase of a Magna Grip System.

Councilor Sarah Heising shared an idea about having a platform for residents to submit concerns or compliments about the city’s parks. Council liked the idea and Mayor Huner said she will talk to HR about moving forward with the suggestion.

Council discussed and decided to move forward with the Park Board recommendation in regards to the monument before they moved to authorize the city to not exceed $10,000 to repair the monument at North Park.

Council then approved to pay the bills before adjourning. The next meeting of the Wauseon City Council will be September 18, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.
