WAUSEON — The committee behind the Wauseon Homecoming has announced it is stepping down and seeking a completely new group of volunteers to take over the community tradition.
In an open letter to the community, the 15-member committee — which has a combined 111 years of volunteer service — said declining attendance, rising costs, and volunteer fatigue have led to the decision. Many members have served well beyond their initial three-year commitments.
The annual celebration was moved two years ago from its longtime uptown location to Dorothy Biddle Park in an effort to boost attendance. Organizers called the relocation a success, but said engagement has continued to decline despite their efforts.
The committee also cited the growing difficulty of securing carnival ride companies, a challenge facing small-town festivals across the region. Rising insurance costs have forced many ride operators to shut down or shift to larger, weeklong events that can better absorb expenses.
This year, the committee was unable to book a ride company at all and turned to inflatables and yard games as alternatives.
Despite the setbacks, the committee said it remains hopeful for the festival’s future. The group is not calling for partial help but for a full replacement committee willing to take the reins and shape the next chapter of the Homecoming.
