(February 12th, 2015) – WAUSEON: It was an emotional evening for the outgoing seniors of the Lady Indian basketball squad. Hugs and tears were a running theme throughout the pregame ceremony meant to honor the four girls playing in their final home game of their high school careers.
Stepping in to try and ruin the affair were the Lady Vikings of Evergreen. They were unable to do so, however, as the Wauseon girls claimed victory by a score of 53-47.
While Wauseon led for virtually the entire contest, Evergreen challenged that lead on several occasions. After falling behind 30-21 at the half, the Lady Vikings came out firing in the third quarter, closing the gap between the two squads within the first two minutes of the period. Suddenly Wauseon was only up by a single point, 30-29.
The Lady Indians would put some distance between themselves and the Vikings again, finishing the quarter with a 41-33 advantage once again. However, Evergreen again fought their way back into the game, scoring 5 unanswered points to pull within 3 points early into the fourth frame. Wauseon had difficulty shaking the Viking girls off their trail, as they led 50-47 with roughly a minute to go in the game. They were able to hang on for the victory, adding another 3 points to their total in the contest’s final minute.
Seniors Sariah Yackee and Natalie Koenig each had monster nights, as the two girls combined for 43 of Wauseon’s 53 points. Yackee led the way with 23 points, while Koenig put up 20 points of her own. Fellow seniors Maddie Richer and Sally Frank each contributed 4 points apiece in the win as well.
