The Wauseon Downtown Association held their annual Amazing Race competition on Saturday, March 17 with a total of 28 participants from 7 families participating in the event. The race, which started and ended at the Wauseon Depot Station on Depot Street, was designed with merchant and historical stops along the race “track”. Racers used clues to find area businesses in search of a picture of the Fulton County Courthouse. Finding the picture allowed each racer to fill out an entry form for prize drawings that were held at the Depot at the end of the race.
A good portion of the participants were youngsters who not only had an opportunity to learn about area merchants and local history, but who also got the opportunity to spend quality time with parents, siblings, and other family members who participated in the event alongside them. While a total of 9 area merchants participated in the event, opening their doors to the racers and providing prizes, these lessons and family time were perhaps the grandest prizes of them all. Still, the Wauseon Downtown Association expresses sincere thanks to Kolb & Son, Grieser Interiors, the Post Office, Southern Breeze, Gig Above, A.K.A. Designs, First Federal Bank, the Congregational Church, and Farmers and Merchants State Bank for their participation.
Wauseon Downtown Association’s President, James Kerr, commented that the Association’s goal is to “build community support for downtown life in Historical Wauseon” and that he truly appreciated the “community support and merchant participation that makes Wauseon a beautiful place to live”. The Wauseon Downtown Association is currently working on promotion a Farmer’s Market to be held on Saturdays in the lot near Southern Breeze and welcomes the community to learn more about their organization and goals by visiting their page on facebook or by visiting their website at www.wauseondowntown.org.
Happening at the same time in Wauseon was the Fulton County Historical Society’s “Time for Tea” event, which invited interested persons to partake in a period tea and luncheon, held at the Fulton County Museum in Wauseon. Those participating took the opportunity to pretend to be a Confederate POW family member on their way to Johnson’s Island near Sandusky while they heard theatrical story-telling during their tea on the museum porch. The event was held in honor of the One Hundred-Fiftieth Anniversary of the Civil War and offered a first person glimpse into Confederate Civil War life while participants were drawn into and became a part of the story and history telling of the staff.
The two events together offered a day packed full of fun and history lessons for all ages, with participants of both receiving the opportunity to learn about historical downtown Wauseon as well as local merchants who are working towards Wauseon’s bright future.
