West Unity Village Council met for 22 minutes on November 30, 2023 for a special meeting at 6 p.m. that resulted in the passing of Ordinance 2023-9, which prohibits both recreational and medical marijuana operators, cultivators, and dispensaries from operating within city limits.
The main reason for this being declared an emergency is that the State of Ohio has yet to release their regulations on this newly legalized industry, and as such, the village would like to disallow everything, with full capacity to amend and / or replace this ordinance at any time.
Discussion was held on the municipality’s eligibility for tax revenue from the cannabis industry, as well as what districts might be considered for future cannabis operations.
When asked, Chief JR Jones shared that it would be up to council on what ordinances they passed, sharing that “it (marijuana) wouldn’t really be any different as far as alcohol goes, policing wise,” before council held discussion on what offenses can be enforced via ordinance.
The council then voted unanimously to pass Ordinance 2023-9 before adjourning at 6:22 p.m.
