The 2013, Old Farmers’ Almanac was an opening highlight by Larry Zuvers (Bryan), who was Toastmaster at the October 1st Northwest Ohio Toastmasters meeting. The first speech was by new member Jim Watkins (Bryan). Jim did an ice breaker speech which reviewed his early years. He related that he learned to appreciate what he has by doing mission trips and working on the farm. Also he learned to deal with various types of people because he had seven varied siblings. Just as his father and mother had completed college around age 40; Jim did the same.
Darlene Sheperd (Bryan) presented a speech on the nine book series called Bloody Jack. It is about a young teenage girl in the 1800’s in London. The orphaned girl is named Jack and has many intriguing adventures. Darlene, as club president, also conducted a business meeting.
The word of the day was ‘cooperate’. It was provided by Karen Lyke (Whitehouse) and the meaning is to effectively work together. Karen also evaluated Darlene’s speech. Loretta Torres (Fayette) counted the use of ‘Ah’ and other improper words. Rebecca Lovelass (Fayette) was the general evaluator and organized roles for the next meeting.
Andy Lyke (Whitehouse) started table topics with: It was a dark and stormy night. One member added to the story for one minute and then handed off to other members who added to the story dealing with a scary character. Barb Steckly (Bryan) timed the speeches and provided an inspirational close on making your years count, rather than counting your years, by looking at priorities.
Guests are always welcome to attend Northwest Ohio Toastmasters’ meetings on the first and third Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Allied Health Building Conference Room at Northwest State Community College south of Archbold.
