SUmmerfestParadeFLoatJun09 WEBThe annual parade in Stryker is set to take place this Saturday, August 23, as part of the Stryker Homecoming festivities.

Line-up for the parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Jagger Cone parking lot. The parade will step off at 11:00 a.m. on North Defiance Street and head south through the town.

The Stryker Area Heritage Council is coordinating the parade.

One of the highlights of the parade will be an appearance of the participants in the Brothers in Blue Motorcycle and Car Poker Run. The group will go through the parade and then begin the poker run as soon as the parade is over.

According to SAHC President Rose Burkholder, entries are still being sought for the parade, and any community entity or organization is invited to have an entry.

“The more entries we have, the better the parade,” Mrs. Burkholder said. “I think it’s a great way to show off all the wonderful things we enjoy about the Stryker area.”

She said registration is not required but is helpful. Entry forms are available at the organization’s website at www.strykerhistory.org.

The form can be downloaded and filled out, and then handed in when the units check in for the line-up. The entry forms will be given to the announcer to explain the unit to those attending the parade.
Mrs. Burkholder said that after the parade there will be an opportunity to see items that belong to the history of the Stryker area.

The Stryker Area Heritage Center, the former Stryker train depot, will be open after the parade for anyone who would like to see the displays, photos, artifacts, and mementos pertaining to Stryker’s history.

There will be people on hand from the Stryker Area Heritage Council to answer questions about the items and history of the area. Items for donation or to put on loan may also be brought to the center that day.

There is no charge to go through the center.

The council has a variety of books and DVDs about the history of the area that will be on sale at the depot. Those who visit the center can also become a member of the council whose mission is to preserve local history.
