Meetings on Thursday, March 11, and Tuesday, March 16, 2021 of the Fulton County Commissioners held the passage of a number of resolutions, one on the 16th being Resolution 2021-206 – Deny Funding Request: EMS tax levied funds should not be used for Salamander technology for the Wauseon Fire Department.

In discussion prior to the vote, Commissioner Joe Short said that he had spoken with Chief Dave Davis. “The Salamander technology has typically been paid for by the the EMS Executive Committee,” Short said, “and they are requesting Commissioner consideration at this point in the process as it is supposed to come through here before it goes before the committee.”

Commissioner Jon Rupp stated that as the Salamander is mainly used for fire, he feels that the EMS should not pay for it, that he does not feel it is right to use the taxpayers money as it is not designated to fund “fire things.”

Commissioner Jeff Rupp explained that it is a personnel tracking system to know where people are in the even of a fire, and they are actively inside the burning structure. Jon Rupp agreed and continued that typically firefighters pull the person out of the fire and EMS goes to work on them.

He continued, “Very rarely would EMS personnel go into a burning structure and need to be tracked.” Short agreed that it is primarily fire related and he supports them finding alternate sources for funding, as the township funds the fire department and the county funds the EMS.
