The Montpelier Parks and Recreation Board held their meeting on Wednesday August 4th at 7PM. The board first moved to approve the minutes from the July 7th meeting followed by the financial statement from July 31st.

A representative from the girls’ softball was present and asked what the process would be like if they were to build a press box at the Division II softball diamond.

It was said that the money would have to be funded through donations due to the fact that the Park Board does not pay for press boxes.

It would also have to have plans approved by the state since it will be built on park property which will also require it to have a state inspection when complete.

It will also require volunteers to document their time when building it. The board then gave approval for the girls’ softball to pursue the idea.

A park and pool report was then given by Park Maintenance Supervisor Nick Ramos. He informed the board that the pool and splash pad have been fairly busy lately.

Pool maintenance has gone smoothly, and the splash pad was pressure washed. Dragging and lining has been getting done at the Division III Softball Diamond for the Tot Ball games and crews have been mowing and weed whacking as well as other maintenance. The soccer fields have been painted and the goals are up.

The bicycle racks have been painted and the sidewalks along Platt Street have been edged. The barbecue grill at the pool pavilion has been replaced.

Straitline Fencing has put up a new fence along the splashpad and a semi-truck full of mulch was added to the playground at Storrer Park.

Recreation Director Sandy Gordon then proceeded to give the recreation report. The concession stand is almost complete and the recreation staff painted the park maintenance barn and recreation office.

The lunch program is still taking place but has been very slow throughout the month of July. Paperwork has been sent out for several pool parties and park pavilion reservations.

Tot Ball season went well in July with 84 players. There are 42 kids who participated in the two weeks of the recreation soccer camps. There are 142 kids registered for Montpelier Soccer which starts in a couple weeks.

A pollinator workshop was held by Soil and Water Conservation and had 35 kids attend. Tot Ball and Soccer league fees will most likely have to be raised to $20 next summer due to increased costs.

The End of Summer Party is Thursday, August 12th and passport prizes will be given out at that time.

Village Manager Jason Rockey then gave an update on park related projects. The trail connector from the Wabash Cannonball trail to State Route 107 is complete. There will be a ribbon cutting at a future date.

The Village is also getting closer to owning a portion of the Wabash Cannonball trail from County Road 13-17. The contractor who was supposed to start construction for the basketball court was recently injured and will be unable to complete the work. Work has begun to find a new contractor.

A contractor has been found to complete work for the Founders Hall project this fall. Pool engineering firms are being sought to do site visits for the Montpelier Pool in order to receive cost estimates for its rehabilitation. The meeting was then voted to adjourn.
