Kids and adults alike saw their wooden cars zip across the track during the Pioneer Cub Scouts’ annual Pinewood Derby.
Cory Rademacher helped the kids in his troop set up as, two by two, competitors from Tiger, Bear, Weblos I, Weblos II, and Junior Girl Scout levels pitted their finely crafted vehicles against one another. Each child was able to take part in three races against opponents from their own division, as a race time based system was used to determine pairings rather than a double elimination format. Even the adults were able to get in on the fun in the Outlaw division.
At the conclusion of racing, trophies were handed out. Racers were graded on the design of their car, its paint job, and their top speed during competition. First place winners in each category in a given division earned the right to compete in the District races. For those claiming first place in two or more categories of their division, they had to choose in which event they wished to advance, with the second place finisher in the other categories assuming first place responsibilities.
The Derby was also a success financially. By the end of the races, $559 had been donated to the Williams County Cub Scouts.
