The Bryan Police Department has been seeing an increase in calls over the past few years. This increase started after COVID restrictions were lifted and resulted in an increase of 1,300 calls from 2020 to 2022.

This has all taken place during a time when police departments are seeing lower applicants.

Bryan Police Chief Greg Ruskey explained that this issue is taking place nationwide. “Nationwide there is a shortage of applicants in law enforcement.”

“We are exploring various recruiting and hiring options, such as posting positions on various media platforms and have increased our starting rate.”

In addition to increasing its rate of pay, the Bryan Police Department has seen additional changes throughout this past year.

“We have added a second K9 team to the department and as of July 19th, implemented body cameras,” said Chief Ruskey.

The chief continued with, “The Bryan Police Department, in coordination with “Sarah’s Friends”, added a forensic interview room that is utilized for juvenile victims.”

“The PD has also started an emergency response team and added an “E-bike” to the existing bike patrol program. The School Resource Officer is hosting a kickball tournament this summer for Bryan youth.”

When asked what law enforcement means to him, Chief Ruskey responded with, “Serving and protecting the citizens of the community. It is a calling and something to believe in.”

“The Bryan Police Department is constantly evolving to improve its services and responsibilities to help the citizens of Bryan, Ohio.”
