(April 4th, 2015) – In an exceptionally tight contest, the Locomotives of Montpelier came from behind late to defeat Edgerton on Saturday, April 4. The game was a defensive affair, with both teams combining to hit the ball 7 times throughout the early afternoon.

The bottom of the seventh inning proved unnecessary, as Montpelier held on to a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs

It wasn’t until the second inning when a run was put on the board. Edgerton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, and the Locos were unable to respond. The third inning passed with no scoring by either unit, as did the fourth.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Loco boys made their move. Bringing home a run, Montpelier was able to tie the contest. After holding Edgerton scoreless in the top of the sixth, a sacrifice fly by Bryce Cooley allowed for the go ahead run to cross home plate. Suddenly up 2-1, the Locomotive defense took over. Retiring three straight Bulldog batters, the Locomotives claimed the win without having to complete the seventh inning.

Four Montpelier batters made contact with the ball. Sophomore Colin Rockey hit for a single. Gunnar Mattson and Andrew Luke each reached first base as well. Devin Nemire earned a double.

Defensively, both teams played pretty well. No errors were committed in the contest. Edgerton was only able to total 3 hits, while the Locomotives fought for 4 hits.

The duo pitching for Montpelier, did an excellent job. Hunter McKelvey started off on the mound for the hometown boys. He gave up 1 run off of 3 hits, as the senior walked 3 batters while recording 2 strike outs. After four innings, Cody Caudill was called in to relieve McKelvey. Another senior, Caudill played almost flawlessly, not allowing a hit and striking out a batter in his three innings. He was credited with the victory.

Defeating Edgerton earned Montpelier their first win of the year. That puts the Locos’ record at 1-2.
