The Edon Board of Education met Monday, September 16th at 5:30 pm for a regular board meeting. All board members were present: Board President Cody Best, Board Vice President Jamie Schaffter, Patty Eicher, Ashley Reed, and David Wehrle.
Also in attendance were Superintendent Anthony Stevens, K-6 Principal Jennifer Ripke, 7-12 Principal Kayla Lapham, Police Chief Tom Szymczak, and a few members of the community.
After the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call there was recognition of visitors none were present, so the board approved the minutes from the August 5th meeting the August financial reports and the amended certificate from the county auditor.
The board also approved August donations totaling $24,387.23 Superintendent Stevens commented a big part of that came from the Athletic Boosters.
The board approved a (Jostens)Then and Now certificate for September 2024, August 2024 NWOESC substitute teacher and paraprofessional list and Fall 2024 Test Administration and Edon Northwest Local test security plan. The board approved the motion to approve consent agenda items.
For reports to the board High School Principal Kayla Lapham mentioned that the new cell phone rules and policies were going well with only two known incidents and that parent-teacher conferences were scheduled for October 7th.
Elementary Principal Jennifer Ripke boasted that she learned the names of all the kindergarten students and that they were working on learning her name.
Superintendent Anthony Stevens said that enrollment numbers are up compared to last year and those numbers are something the district likes to keep an eye on.
He also touched on election time and ballot issues and that a public meeting would be scheduled in October if people want more information or have questions.
For action items, there is a recommendation to amend hours for bus route contracts for the 2024-2025 school year. Stevens commented how thankful and appreciative the district is to have bus driver Kim Hickman because she tried everything to cover as many of the routes as she possibly could and help out in any way.
Recommendations were also presented to approve supplemental contracts, approve van drivers, a recommendation to approve a one-year contract for Allison Bloir as Guidance Counselor effective August 12th for the 2024-2025 school year. Recommendation to approve the agreement with Wood County Juvenile Detention Center for the 2024-2025 school year.
For the approval of the tuition rates for 2024-2025 in-state $5,874.82, out-of-state $14725.43 (annual action) board member David Wehrle requested discussion on this action item.
Two memorandums presented for board approval were a memorandum of understanding between the Edon Northwest Teachers Association and the Edon Northwest Local Schools Board of Education with the new fully insured vision plans through OHI and a memorandum of understanding with Defiance College for hosting the teacher Education candidates.
The Edon Board of Education approved all of the action items except for the tuition rates/taxes which will need further discussion.
The board meeting adjourned at 5:50 pm to enter into executive session. The next Edon Board of Education meeting is scheduled for October 14th at 5:30 pm.
