The Pike-Delta-York Local School District Board of Education chose to temporarily table approval of a contract for a school resource officer through the Delta Police Department as they research potential funding concerns.
According to Superintendent Jon Burke, he and the board would like to determine the likelihood of obtaining a grant they plan to use to fund the position before they give it their final sign off.
The grant for which they are applying would cover the full $45,000 annual cost for the officer for the first year, then taper each year throughout the five-year cycle of the grant. After the grant expires, they can apply for it again.
Burke said they want to make sure they are likely to receive the grant or determine an alternate funding source prior to approving the contract.
