FAYETTE (May 3, 2025) – The Lemony Snicket movie is some 20 years old now, but the baseball version of unfortunate events reared its ugly head at Fayette over and over again, as Holgate scored in every inning including 10 in the first, in a 19-2 romp over the Eagles.
Grady Hoffer’s triple began the first and the Tigers piled on six more hits in the first off Fayette’s Mason Leininger.
A wild pitch scored the first run of 10. Run scoring hits from Austin Medina and Vincent Peck made it 3-0. Izzy Resendez added a two-run double with two down and then came the myriad of mishaps.
Brock Verehoff’s pop fly fell for a hit and a throwing error tacked on another tally.
Then came a pair of dropped fly balls and Medina’s second run producing hit of the frame to make it 8-0.
A wild pitch and a passed ball brought in the final runs of the first for the Tigers.
Izayah Martinez’ two-run triple was the biggest hit in a four run second off Carter Lavinder, then the Tigers got two more in the third without a hit on a walk, a throwing error, another passed ball and a sacrifice fly.
Peck’s double brought home a run in the fourth and then Peck got his third hit of the day against Cru Lavinder in the fifth after two walks and another fielding miscue extended the inning.
Fayette got a run in the second when Carter Lavinder doubled and came home on a throwing error when Caleb Lerma beat out an infield hit.
The Eagles scored again in the third on a walk and a throwing error on a dropped third strike that got down the right field line.
Zack Boecker got the win for Holgate, while Leininger took the loss. Fayette hosts Emmanuel Christian Monday, then plays North Central Tuesday and hosts Hilltop Thursday.
