Members of the Wauseon Board of Education heard of a multitude of student activities taking place at Wauseon Schools during their regular October 12 meeting.
Primary principal Troy Armstrong reported that the Kindergartners have recently had school bus safety training with Tommy the School Bus as well as that Fire Safety Week was a success. The Kindergartners had a fire simulation with the local fire department and other grade levels held class discussions and participated in various activities dealing with Fire Safety.
Armstrong additionally reported that the K-2 staff will be participating in professional development with the new English Language Arts series on October 27 and 28. Teachers have also been looking at their STAR data and have begun filling out concern forms with Jessica Gerig. From there, the process of deciding on interventions and progress monitoring of students’ growth will begin.
Elementary principal Theresa Veitmeier reported that the third graders recently participated in a field trip to the Fulton County Fairgrounds for Ag-Fest. Students traveled from station to station to learn about various topics. Some of the stations that the students attended were bees, dairy, blacksmith, safety, rope, soil, small animals, Potawatomi, insects, port, and then and now.
Third graders also recently received a special gift from the Lions Club, who visited the school and presented dictionaries to every third grade student.
WHS students will once again be assisting this year with the reading mentoring program at WES. Several WHS students were recruited to volunteer their time to the WES students who need reading and academic support. The project is coordinated by Pat Turpening.
Veitmeier also reported that each grade level has met to discuss the structure of intervention. They have analyzed the students’ STAR reading/math data in order to obtain their starting points for the year. Faculty is continuing by working through the RTI process to get interventions in place and the RTI Committee is establishing goals for the second year.
Middle school principal Joe Friess reported that WMS recently had a “yellow day” to promote suicide prevention efforts. Activities including wearing and yellow and classes made sidewalk art with chalk. The students are also currently involved in Red Ribbon Week, focusing on the theme “The Best Me is Drug Free”.
Additionally, Friess reported that the 21st Century Grant is up and running. The first day of the program was September 21 and Wauseon is off to a very good start. 24 students have been attending on a consistent basis and three have been attending help sessions in the morning prior to the start of the school day.
Keith Leatherman, Wauseon High School Principal, reported that Homecoming week was observed by students with a lot of participation and spirit. The sophomore class won the hallway and float competitions but the overall winner for the week, which also takes into account daily theme participation, was the senior class.
Leatherman also congratulated the Wauseon Indian Marching Band as they qualified for the OMEA state contest for a second time. The band also took first place in all areas including music, percussion, guard, visuals, and general effect for their competition class and placed 2nd overall at the Maumee Music in Motion contest.
Parents and students are reminded that fall OGT testing will begin on November 2, that the WHS Marching Band Concert will be held on November 5, and that there will be a Veterans’ Day assembly on November 11.
During the public participation portion of the meeting, the Board heard from Mr. Curt Fauver, who addressed the Board regarding Boy Scouts of America.
Additionally during the meeting the Board approved the minutes, bills, financial reports, and investments as presented. The authorization of several “then and now” certificates were also approved.
Donations approved during the meeting included:
•$959.84 from the Wauseon Athletic Boosters to the WHS Athletic Department to be used toward Boys’ Cross Country uniforms.
•$3566.25 from the Wauseon Athletic Boosters to the WHS Athletic Department to be used toward a new Football Field ice machine.
•$1799 from the Wauseon Athletic Boosters to the WHS Athletic Department to be used toward the payment of the Hudl Subscription for 2015-16.
Personnel items approved by the Board included:
•Kody Moden as a Volunteer Bowling Coach for the 2015-16 school year.
•Trina Fry and Jessica Smith as Classified Substitutes for the 2015-16 school year.
•Sabrina Hartson as a Substitute Bus Driver for the 2105-16 school retroactive to April 13, 2015.
The resignation of Bridget Olenik as a Summer Instrumental Instructor, effective October 2, 2015.
The Board also listened to a presentation given by Superintendent Larry Brown on College Credit Plus.
The Board entered into Executive Session for the discussion of the employment of personnel. No action was taken.
The next Board of Education meeting will be held at noon on Thursday, October 22 at the Wauseon High School.
