NAPOLEON (May 20, 2026) – There were tense moments at the beginning of the contest between Archbold and Delphos Jefferson in a Division V district semifinal.
Both teams left runners in scoring position through the first three innings of the game. The Bluestreaks did all of their scoring in the final three innings of the game to advance to the district final with an 8-0 win.
“They are a pretty solid team,” said Archbold head coach Sarah Dominique about the Wildcats. “I knew they could hit the ball.
“I was just hoping that our defense showed up and our pitching showed up and thankfully they did.” Madi Bowers took to the circle for the Bluestreaks and gave up a single to Delphos Jefferson’s leadoff hitter Carolyn Mueller.
Bowers settled in and struck out the next two batters. Mueller stole second base to move into scoring position but was stranded there after Bowers got Ky Eberle to ground out for the third out.
Claire Brinkman was in the circlep for the Wildcats to start the game. Adi Kinsman hit leadoff for the Streaks and went to a 3-2 count before being hit by a pitch to reach first base.
Archbold played some small ball when Makena Thiel’s sacrifice bunt moved Kinsman to second. Brinkman got Meg Ames to fly out to left field for the second out of the inning.
Charlee Forward hit a single past third base to move Kinsman to third. Forward moved to second base after the throw came all the way home.
Bowers could not bring the first run home after flying out to right field. Archbold shut Delphos Jefferson down in the second inning and started their half of the inning on a positive note.
Klaire Kern walked to start the inning and moved to second after Daylin Bosco singled to left. Brinkman got a strikeout and two fly ball outs to strand the Bluestreak runners and keep the game scoreless.
Brylee Geary started the top of the third with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maleah Suever.
Mueller grounded out to second base but moved Geary to third to give Jefferson their best scoring chance. Bowers went to a full count on Isabella Basinger before getting a pop fly out to end the inning.
Archbold had another chance to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning.
After Thiel popped out for the first out, Ames singled and Forward followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out.
Brinkman got Bowers to fly out and Kern to ground out to end the threat. Archbold got the first two outs of the fourth inning before Megan Kerner singled past the third baseman, Ames.
Brinkman came up and slapped a single to left field. Kerner aggressively rounded second trying to reach third, but the relay from Emma Meyer to Ames was perfect, and Kerner was tagged out at third to get the Streaks out of the inning.
Bosco led off the inning with a shot over the right fielder for a triple to get an early threat going for Archbold. Raegan Gerken walked to put runners on the corners.
Meg Burkholder, pinch running for Gerken, got to second with a stolen base. Demi Short came up and hit a deep fly ball to center, which allowed Bosco to tag up and score the first run of the contest.
Burkholder made the second out trying to reach third on the play. Kinsman singled but was forced out on a Thiel ground ball for the final out.
The Wildcats went down in order in the top of the fifth. Archbold went back to work with an Ames single and a Forward double to put runners on first and second.
A wild pitch by Brinkman allowed Ames to score from third for a 2-0 Bluestreak lead. Forward moved to third on the play.
Bowers flied out to center, which allowed Forward to score the third run of the game. Delphos Jefferson got out of the inning with no further damage done but found themselves in a 3-0 hole.
Bowers stayed on the mound and looked strong, getting a fly ball out and getting the second out on a strikeout.
After giving up a single to Gianna Lee, Bowers got Eberle to swing and miss for the third out. “All year long we have been pretty solid defensively,” said Dominique.
“We’ve had a pretty bad spring weather wise so we haven’t had many practices outside. I’m impressed with the girls ability to lock in and focus defensively when we can get outside to practice. We’re just not getting the reps that we should be getting.”
The Streaks were looking to score some insurance runs in the sixth inning. An error by Lee allowed Short to get all the way to second base. After a fly ball out, Thiel singled to center to move Short to third base.
On the throw into the infield, the ball went all the way to home, which allowed Thiel to get to second. Ames walked to load the bases.
Short came home on a Brinkman wild pitch to give the Streaks a 4-0 lead. Thiel moved to third, and Ames was standing on second.
Forward singled to score Thiel and move Ames to third. A throwing error by the catcher Mueller allowed Ames to score and moved Forward to second.
Another wild pitch moved Forward to third. Bowers walked and reached third when a pop fly by Kern was mishandled by Geary for an error. Forward scored, and Archbold had a 7-0 lead.
A fly ball by Bosco allowed Bowers to tag up and score, but Kern was tagged out trying to get to third for the out.
All Archbold needed was three more outs to reach the district final, and three more outs was exactly what they got. Bowers got Kerner and Brinkman to ground out for the first two outs.
Blaire Gable popped up just behind the plate, and Kinsman secured the catch for the final out of the game.
“Sometimes it just takes us a little while to get going,” said Dominique. “But as long as we put the ball in play, good things will happen.
“They’re very resilient and very team focused. If they have a bad at bat they’re looking to turn around and encourage the next person. That’s just a testament to who they are as people and softball players.”
