Anyone driving through downtown Montpelier this spring will have to be on the lookout for road construction crews.
The Village Council talked about some upcoming projects that will impact downtown this spring. Local businesses will be able to remain open, but drivers will have to deal with several detours.
The council talked about the reconstruction of Main Street between Monroe and Platt. The $158,858 project will involve milling the current asphalt surface and removing the brick layer underneath as well as digging down 18 inches.
A new base will be laid with an asphalt cap, Kurt Roan, supervisor of administrative services said. Main Street will be completely closed, he said.
The council awarded the bid to Crestline Paving earlier. The project will be funded using state and county Community Development Block Grants and a Small Government Loan, Roan said.
Detours will be on Washington to the south and Madison to the north. Truck traffic detours will be determined by ODOT some time later.
“All deliveries will be from the alley,” Roan said. “As will pedestrian traffic.”
The contract calls for work to begin after April 11 and be completed by the end of June.
“This has needed to be done for some time,” Roan said.
The other project involves paving portions of several side streets. The council awarded the low bid to M & M Paving for $66,206 March 28.
The project will include the 500-800 block of East Lawrence Street, the 200 block of E. Wayne Street and the 1200-1300 block of East Madison Street.
“There is no time frame set,” Roan said.
In other news:
•The council welcomed a local government class which filled the gallery in the meeting room.
•The council went into executive session to discuss personnel, but took no action.
The council’s next meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, April 11 next to the police station at 221 Empire St.
