Jade W. Herzog, 41, recently heard his sentencing for his involvement in a week long crime spree that spanned three states and included multiple stolen vehicles.
Just prior to the incident, Herzog had been in custody in Hillsdale County after a warrant had been issued for his arrest on December 5 by Hillsdale Count Circuit Judge Michael R. Smith for failing to appear for a sentencing hearing on methamphetamine related charges.
On December 26, Herzog walked from Hillsdale Hospital while on medical leave from the county jail and a subsequent crime spree that spanned several counties across the tri-state area of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan commenced at that time.
Wauseon police attempted to apprehend Herzog, but he rammed their police vehicle, and the chase quickly made its way into Williams County, where Herzog attempted to ram Williams County Sheriff’s Office vehicles as well.
The tire on the S-10 pick-up that Herzog had been driving during the chase eventually blew, causing Herzog to lose control of the vehicle and end up in a ditch on County Road O near Kunkle, Ohio.
Herzog faced multiple felony charges in Williams County alone and has been convicted of six counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, fourth degree felonies; one count of burglary, a second degree felony; and one count of felonious assault, a first degree felony.
Williams County Common Pleas Court Judge J.T. Stelzer sentenced Herzog on these charges to 17 months of incarceration on each of the grand theft of a motor vehicle charges, 3 years of incarceration on the burglary charge, and 6 years of incarceration on the felonious assault charge. The sentences are to be served concurrently with one another as well as concurrent to the sentence imposed by Fulton County. Herzog was given credit for time served. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amounts of $100 and $80 as well as ordered to pay all costs of prosecution, any court appointed counsel costs, and any supervision fees permitted.
