On Monday, October 20, the Archbold Board of Education met for its regular monthly meeting with members Tyson Stuckey, Skeat Hug, Gina Benecke, Karen Beck, and Jeremy Hurst present.
Elementary Principal Andrea Thiel, Middle School Principal Matthew Shields, Curriculum Director Michele Bagrowski, Superintendent Jayson Selgo, and Treasurer/CFO Joyce Kinsman were also on hand to share the latest district news with the board. High School Principal Royal Short was absent.
Mrs. Bagrowski, the district’s Curriculum Director, presented a slide show to the board breaking down the ratings issued by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce in the 2024-2025 School Report Card.
Every year, districts and schools across the state of Ohio receive an overall rating between 1 and 5 stars in half-star increments, based on six components: Achievement (25%), Progress (25%), Graduation (12.5%), Gap Closing (12.5%), Early Literacy (12.5%), and College, Career, Workforce, Military Readiness (12.5%).
In the 2024-2025 period, Archbold Area Schools received the following ratings:
Achievement-5 stars (Same rating in 2023-2024), Progress-2 stars (Same rating in 2023-2024), Gap Closing-3 stars (5 stars in 2023-2024), Graduation-4 stars (5 stars in 2023-2024), Early Literacy-3 stars (4 stars in 2023-2024 rating) College, Career, Workforce, and Military Readiness-3 stars (did not contribute to rating in 2023-2024).
Based on the above individual ratings, the Archbold Area Schools earned an overall rating of 4 stars, which is the same received in 2023-2024.
Principal Andrea Thiel began the elementary report by highlighting the new Bluestreak Backpack Buddies program, which, thanks to the generosity of community members, currently provides food and personal care items to 47 elementary students. Thiel also thanked Heather Trowbridge for helping to get the program up and running.
Principal Thiel also expressed gratitude to NorthStar BlueScope Steel for a generous donation, which will allow for an upgrade to the elementary playground equipment in the near future.
In his report, Principal Matthew Shields pointed out that AMS welcomed seven new staff members who are adapting well, and they are off to a very smooth start.
Mr. Elting, the new Student Council advisor, has organized not only the traditional events that students look forward to but also planned the middle school’s first Halloween Dance.
Shields also recognized Mrs. Grisier for leading the fall choir concert and the Grandparents’ Day performance.
In athletic news, the middle school principal shared that the regular season has concluded for all fall sports teams.
He added that both volleyball teams advanced to league championship games, the eighth-grade football team completed their junior high careers undefeated, and the cross country team “had a real nice year as well.”
