With a 69.95% voter turnout, Williams County filled positions at the county-wide level. Three races – County Prosecutor, County Sheriff and County Treasurer – were contested. Running for Williams County Prosecutor, Kirk Yosick defeated Lora Manon to win the position. Yosick took just under 65% of the popular vote while Manon received just over 35%. More closely contested was the race for Williams County Sheriff between Steve Towns and Dan Hughes. Towns won, receiving 59.34% of the popular vote to Hughes’ 40.66%. While important to the county, the races took a backseat to the hotly contested presidential campaigns of President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney. The new pavilion at the Main Street Park, on the site where Montpelier’s High School once stood, was dedicated during a ceremony on November 5, 2012. The pavilion is truly a jewel and a wonderful addition to the village. Glen A. Frey, age 51, of rural West Unity, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 31, 2012, in his home. He worked in maintenance for Rupp Seed, Inc. in Pettisville since 1979, and he had also been a lifelong area farmer. Glen was born in Wauseon on August 9, 1961, the son of Merle and Evelyn (Prowant) Frey. On September 25, 1987 he married Lisa Stuckey, and she survives. Glen attended Solid Rock Community Church in West Unity, where he also served as a trustee and attended a weekly bible study. Glen lived his life dedicated to serving the Lord.…

Eleven Four County Career Center students recently participated in the 25th Annual Northwest Ohio Student Leadership Conference held at Defiance College. “There has been a tremendous increase in the number of families that come in,” said Pastor Julia Ronngren, West Unity United Methodist Church home of the Outstretched Hands Food Pantry. “We have had an increase in the number of repeat families, especially families with small children, in the last year.” In the month of October, Outstretched Hands served 38 families. Alcohol compliance checks performed in Fulton County throughout the summer turned up disappointing results. Twenty-four Fulton County businesses were checked for illegal liquor sales by the Ohio Investigative Unit (OIU), a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, with one business being checked twice. This countywide sweep resulted in twenty instances in which minors were denied the sale of alcohol and five instances of minors being served alcohol. The Northwest Township Building, located just north of the intersection of State Route 49 and US 20, was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning, October 23, 2012. Determined by inspectors as electrical in nature, the fire left the building and its contents as a total loss (the value remains unknown at this time). Township snow removal equipment, housed in another building at the time of the fire, was unaffected; efforts to clear roads this upcoming winter season should not be hampered.
