Brady Township Trustees met Monday, June 8, to discuss ongoing road maintenance projects, fire department needs, and a potential permissive vehicle registration tax increase.
Chairman Willie Grime, James Eisel, Tim Nofziger, and Fiscal Officer Chrystal Maneval were in attendance. Trustees spent considerable time discussing the possibility of adopting a $5 permissive license plate tax.
The fee would be added to annual vehicle registrations within the township’s unincorporated areas and would apply to vehicles such as cars, trailers, and recreational vehicles.
Residents living within villages and municipalities would not be affected.
Ohio law allows taxing districts to impose up to $30 annually per vehicle through a combination of county, municipal, and township permissive taxes.
Trustees said the proposed fee would serve as a proactive measure to help fund road maintenance, potentially reducing the need for larger tax levy requests in the future.
Before any action can be taken, two public hearings must be held. Those hearings are scheduled for June 11, 2026, and June 16, 2026, both beginning at 7 p.m.
Following the hearings, Trustees will pass a resolution to forward the request to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
Road maintenance updates were also provided during the meeting. Trustees reported that crack sealing work has been completed, while chip-and-seal projects remain pending.
Materials have already arrived, and the township is waiting for the contractor to begin work.
Trustees received an update regarding Fire Levy No. 1, which is scheduled for renewal this year. The township is currently awaiting resolutions from the Williams County Auditor’s Office, with additional information expected at the Board’s next meeting.
Brady Township also plans to apply for a cemetery grant that could provide up to $5,000 for landscaping improvements, including the trimming and removal of overgrown trees. Applications for the grant program are due by July 31, 2026.
Fire Chief Justin Smith requested the purchase of F500 firefighting foam after the department depleted its supply responding to several recent vehicle fires.
Smith noted the department has not purchased additional foam in two years, and requested the purchase of 10 pails at a cost of $185 each.
Six pails are required to fill the department’s system, and the foam will be obtained through the Village of Edgerton.
In other business, Trustees approved an application for a probationary firefighter.
With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:38 p.m. The next Brady Township Trustee meeting is scheduled for June 22, 2026, at 7 p.m.
