The Bryan Board of Education met for a regular meeting on Monday, October 14th at 6 pm.After the Pledge of Allegiance, the meeting began promptly at 6 pm headed by Debra Opdycke. All board members were present for the Roll call.
Ben Camarillo, Debra Opdycke, Dustin Schlachter, Caleb Turnbull, and Lynn Wieland also in attendance were High School principal Steven Alspaugh, Elementary principal Amy Dominique, Athletic Director Nathan Keel, Director of Teaching and Learning Karyn Cox, Superintendent Mark Rairigh and Treasurer Kevin Schafer as well as a few members of the community.
First on the agenda was the approval of the meeting minutes from the September 16th regular meeting and October 4th Special meeting—no public concerns or participation.
For communications and administrative reports Athletic Director Nathan Keel congratulated the football team on the win over Swanton and said that this Friday night would be Military Appreciation night and that they are doing a change challenge where the money will be donated back to Veterans.
There is also a Goodwill trailer that can be donated to where there is a contest between Bryan and Wauseon on which school can donate the most weight in donations. The winner may receive a scholarship of $250 and $500.
For the elementary report, Principal Dominique mentioned that the fire department helped with a fire prevention assembly. For the Middle/High School report, Principal Alspaugh discussed the upcoming Quiz Bowl on October 22nd and Red Ribbon Week and Plans for a Day of Awesomeness.
Cox mentioned plans for Career Day and ELA state testing for grades three through eight. For the Four County Report Camarillo talked about the new Drug Free Club and a Banned Books week.
As well as a visit to the facility from the Board of Elections where eligible students were registered to vote.
For the treasurer’s report, Schafer requested that the board approve the monthly financial reports and Montpelier/St Patrick’s Title 1 service contract for FY25. Motion approved by Turnbull and seconded by Camarillo.

A 2.5 million dollar grant was received and the funds have been presented to the board to use towards the inclusion of Auxiliary Gym and weight room and the add-on of STEM/Innovations center. Both projects are projected to cost around 6 million combined.
Personnel recommendations are for Nicole Malanga to move to MA+20. The retirement of Kathy Scheckelhoff. Supplemental resignation for 24-25 winter season for Nicole Minor – Assistant Girls Basketball Coach and Brian and Julie Cummins – Jr High Track Coaches. Adjusting the winter season supplemental for John Minor – Assistant Girls Basketball Coach, Delaney Valderas – Assistant Girls Basketball Coach, and Del Miller – Girls Head Wrestling.
New Hire Paraprofessional Brandy Worthington for PK-5 intervention. Athletic hires CJ Roth as Varsity Wrestling Assistant and Hilary Staten as Varsity Softball head coach. For athletic volunteers Nicole Minor for girls basketball and Marlee Yoder for girls wrestling.
A motion to approve the superintendent’s recommendations was made by Turnbull and seconded by Camarillo.
The Bryan Board of Education went into executive session to discuss complaints filed against an employee.
The meeting adjourned at 6:45 pm the next meeting is scheduled for November 18th at 6pm.
